S

SCARAB:

a beetle shaped talisman, popular with ancient Egyptians. Back to Top

SCATOMANCY:

diving the future by studying and examining the scat (feces) of animals. Back to Top

SCRY:

diving the future by peering into a crystal ball or water. (See HYDROMANCY) Back to Top

SÉANCE:

a gathering in which a medium calls upon spirits in the other world to communicate with those attending the séance. Normally the spirits are known to the departed. Many times during a séance a medium will channel information from the spirit(s) to the attendee(s). Back to Top

SECOND SIGHT:

colloquial term for the ability to see into the future. Back to Top

SEER:

one who is a clairvoyant or prophet; one who "sees beyond the veil." Back to Top

SHAMANISM:

Traditional Asian and Native American practice and belief that a skilled Shaman (or medium) can communicate with the spirit world and bring back information such as healing remedies and powers, messages for individuals, etc. Shamans are traditionally healers as well. Back to Top

SIGIL:

a sign used in magical writings. Back to Top

SIXTH SENSE:

the ability to sense that beyond the five senses; primarily used to refer to mind-reading or other type of psychic ability. Back to Top

SOOTHSAYING:

making predictions about the future. (It was a soothsayer who warned Ceasar "Beware the ides of March.") Back to Top

SORCERER:

a male who uses sorcery or magic. Back to Top

SORCERESS:

a female who uses sorcery or magic. Back to Top

SORCERY:

the application of forms, spells, chants, or prayers for a set goal; normally associated with witchcraft. Back to Top

SORTILEGE:

divination practice in which the practitioner chooses lots. Back to Top

SPECTER:

a ghost. Back to Top

SPELL:

a formula, potion, incantation, or process in which there is an end result in which the individual casting the spell desires. Back to Top

SPELLBIND:

a condition in which one is bound by a spell or trance. Back to Top

SPIRIT:

the essence of one's self, that which lives beyond the physical death; called soul by many. Back to Top

SPIRIT WRITING:

a practice wherein the medium allows the writing hand to be controlled by the spirit so that the spirit may communicate through writing on the paper while controlling the medium's hand. Back to Top

SPIRITUAL:

of or relating to matters of the spirit. Back to Top

SUPERNATURAL:

beyond the capability of modern science to ascertain, test or repeat. Normally refers to something not of this physical plane. Back to Top

SYNCHRONICITY:

how events are interconnected with coincidences and the meanings that can be derived therefrom. Back to Top
